What’s the Best Postpartum Underwear?

Learn what postpartum underwear is best for you!

Your days of wearing g-strings and thongs might have disappeared a long time ago.

Now you are more concerned about comfort and absorption than the least amount of fabric you can wear under your clothing.

While it might have taken you awhile to come around to the idea of wearing “granny panties,” you know now that they are an essential part of pregnancy and postpartum recovery.

While your tummy is likely shrinking after giving birth, you should no longer need those pregnancy underwear that could double as a small blanket.

Postpartum underwear can serve a variety of purposes, from helping to get that tummy back in pre pregnancy shape to, dare I say…make you feel sexy!

Some of my postpartum underwear picks are specifically for those mamas that had a c-section while others are better for those unexpected leaks.

There are plenty of things to be worried about and make you uncomfortable after you give birth, your underwear shouldn’t be one of them.

Why Wear Postpartum Underwear?

Let’s face it, you just went through 9 months of hormonal changes, your body changing, and probably haven’t seen your netherregions for awhile (at least without a mirror).

Right after delivery you can expect to bleed a lot, at least for a week or so.

While those giant maxi pads are going to be your best friend, they certainly are not very comfortable.

Most normal undies won’t fit these pads very well either.

Particularly if you have had a c-section, you can’t wear anything low rise for quite some time as it will end up sitting right on your incision and you don’t want that!

What to Look for In Postpartum Underwear

There are several things to look for in postpartum undies that will make for a good pick.

The fabric should be breathable and comfortable so that your nethers don’t get too hot.

A stretchy polycotton is a pretty safe bet.

You might also want something that has light compression in order to help your uterus move back into place. This can also help you to feel a bit less jiggly.

You also want to be sure that the underwear is absorbent.

You don’t want to be walking around with something that is going to leave you feeling goopy or that could cause irritation.

Lastly, style.

While you can count out thongs at this point, you might need to consider having a style of postpartum underwear that looks ok under clothes. Postpartum underwear comes in many different styles, from high waisted briefs to ones that look like bike shorts.

There are even disposable underwear if you are just looking for some short term solutions.

Top Postpartum Underwear Picks

Here are nine postpartum underwear choices in a variety of styles. Keep reading all the way to the end to see my #1 top pick.

Disposable Postpartum Underwear

When it comes to disposable underwear, many women might think of it like wearing a diaper. While your grandma’s incontinence undies might be easily spotted under her kaftan, you won’t have to worry about that with any of these disposable postpartum underwear. These are much more comfortable and discrete than granny’s diapers.

Frida Mom Disposable Postpartum Underwear

Frida mom knows pregnancy and postpartum bodies.

These disposable undies come in both boy short and high waisted styles.

While they are moisture wicking, they are not absorbent, so you would still need to wear a pad with them. They are made from a mesh-free microfiber that is soft on the skin and can easily fit a large pad.

Always Discreet Postpartum and Incontinence Underwear

If this is your first baby, I hate to break it to you, you’re going to pee yourself at some point.

When you sneeze, laugh too hard, or cough, it’s bound to happen. Rather than worry about embarrassing little accidents, protect yourself with this discreet and comfortable, disposable underwear.

From pee to postpartum bleeding, you can feel confident and secure knowing you are protected with it’s odor locking technology.

Depend Silhouette Incontinence Underwear

While you might think of Depends as undies for old ladies, they also work very well for women who have just given birth. While they are hailed for incontinence, they are also effective at absorbing postpartum bleeding.

They range in absorbency from maximum to minimum so you can get different levels as your bleeding tapers off.

Amazon Brand Postpartum Disposable Underwear

Amazon is coming out with their brand for just about everything under the sun, even postpartum undies. These come at a great price point and Dri-Fit technology to help keep moisture under control.

Mesh Postpartum Underwear

Next to your disposable underwear, you have mesh panties.

Think of the ones that they give you at the hospital right away after delivery. They are not in the least bit flattering, have a ton of stretch, and are able to hold those giant pads in place.

Seamless Mesh Knit Postpartum Panties in Black

The great thing about these postpartum underwear is that they don’t really look like those mesh ones that you get from the hospital but are just as effective.

They don’t have a waistband and are super stretchy. They can easily fit large pads and ice packs for recovering mamas.

These are also disposable, which make them a reliable, short term use panty.

Washable Mesh Postpartum Underwear

This high waisted design is perfect for those mamas that have had a c-section and healing incisions.

They provide a close body fit without feeling restricted. While these are washable, they won’t last forever. Toss them in on the gentle cycle and reuse them three to five times.

High Waisted Postpartum Underwear

High waisted postpartum underwear is great for giving you that extra support in the tummy area and helping to keep everything in place. High waisted undies work great a few days after delivery and throughout your postpartum journey.

You can even wear them with a postpartum belly wrap.

Thinx Period Underwear

Hailed as the period underwear, these are incredibly absorbent.

They provide all day comfort while absorbing excess liquids.

While I would definitely recommend wearing a pad until you are done bleeding, these are a great option to provide peace of mind until your period is on a regular schedule again.

Plus the high waisted option is great for keeping that tummy in check. They also have a high waisted boy short option.

C-Section Postpartum Underwear

You need to take extra care when you have a c-section.

You want to make sure that you aren’t wearing anything that is going to press on your incision or get caught on your steri strips.

Therefore, all high waisted postpartum panties will work pretty well, however, there are a few pairs that are specifically made for those mamas who have had a c-section.

UpSpring C-Panty C-Section Support

While this isn’t my top pick overall, it is certainly at the top for c-section panties.

While these are on the pricier side for the panties on the list, these postpartum underwear are totally worth it!

These were designed by a medical team with the help of a mother who has actually had a c-section, specifically for c-section recovery. They are a latex free, high waisted design with an interior silicone panel to help reduce scarring. They provide comfortable and targeted compression to help move things back into place.

Peauty High Waisted C-Section Recovery Panties

These c-section postpartum panties are not only comfortable, they are kinda sexy.

Made with a durable and pretty lace waistband, it will stay up without the worry about irritating your incision.

They come in a variety of colors and even come with a laundry bag for easier washing.

Plus they are kinda cute!
